It was past time to clean and freshen #1's bed so I decided to switch it up a bit while she was out and not here to share her opinion. I know once I did it she would be fine with it and she was. So Hello Kitty took a break and my Strawberry Shortcake blanket went to work.<br />

The pillow and blanket I got in the box from the estate sale a few months ago, mentioned<a href="http://markandcaras.blogspot.com/2017/11/"> here.</a><br />
<br />
Which reminds me, I did get the train hung in #2's room.<br />

and apparently I cannot get this off of my phone as a rectangle so you can see the whole train and shelf and I definitely can't take a real photo in here with my camera at 11 o'clock at night so there you have it!<br />
<br />
If I had truly been motivated I would have dug around my basement to find more strawberry pillows and stuffies but I'm sure they will migrate upstairs on their own eventuallyCarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16614543493973360714noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4048227180928594733.post-1547123296765557272018-06-10T23:43:00.000-05:002018-06-10T23:44:43.442-05:00Sink Repair Update (Finally!)I'm sure everyone was on the edge of their seats by the end of my last post and then I left you hanging for...four months!? Here is a photo of my naughty mermaid to make up for it?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAkPfWedRM8TPiLItKJw82jjetSgr8dCPmOBny2aKWPBg6Kc2uKIGgt71ITw3vNxRfgYED67PnjAQ5AdEfVW2Lx3WJgoGGBO9Gp0c_Cu-RpI28ZffkqE88VDyu5DKpoq3acvzrpvHMjmFR/s1600/vintage+naughty+mermaid.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1406" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAkPfWedRM8TPiLItKJw82jjetSgr8dCPmOBny2aKWPBg6Kc2uKIGgt71ITw3vNxRfgYED67PnjAQ5AdEfVW2Lx3WJgoGGBO9Gp0c_Cu-RpI28ZffkqE88VDyu5DKpoq3acvzrpvHMjmFR/s400/vintage+naughty+mermaid.jpg" width="351" /></a></div>
<br />
The faucet set fit with relatively little drama. My dad took his dremel and just cut off all of the weird 100 year old corroded on spout and drain pieces. After that, everything fit as it should. Yay!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBKi3nEv07cPpI3DRb8YK3rSYxsLmBaHkmY0EsmT3kPjxe59b6csbos3XSY1oo17VSrY-YPNgzwbcAmrzM2HtJSvseN_imvzDn8E5KVhrPhTw8_ycS0DJ2Gpu92j1xl-z3y4oJg6oW8O-6/s1600/broken+antique+sink+handles.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1163" data-original-width="1600" height="290" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBKi3nEv07cPpI3DRb8YK3rSYxsLmBaHkmY0EsmT3kPjxe59b6csbos3XSY1oo17VSrY-YPNgzwbcAmrzM2HtJSvseN_imvzDn8E5KVhrPhTw8_ycS0DJ2Gpu92j1xl-z3y4oJg6oW8O-6/s400/broken+antique+sink+handles.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The before set and before I vinegar-ed out the gross water marks on the sink - Yuck! The faucets looked OK until you started looking at them and realized the hot water said "waste." I do own the hot water...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAGlmrtV1h4mltK8CWmW0Dt9yoPb2cy590s1LjG3Av7BD9x7_7dmHh2KbN3Xiq2C_aovZqSKwofgqjAe8WrDkn7vjBBI_97s2jaPWKkM492lewM58HOldKFkHdOphXNcPfJRvtuNzJ7PvA/s1600/vintage+broken+bathroom+sink+handles.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1004" data-original-width="1600" height="250" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAGlmrtV1h4mltK8CWmW0Dt9yoPb2cy590s1LjG3Av7BD9x7_7dmHh2KbN3Xiq2C_aovZqSKwofgqjAe8WrDkn7vjBBI_97s2jaPWKkM492lewM58HOldKFkHdOphXNcPfJRvtuNzJ7PvA/s400/vintage+broken+bathroom+sink+handles.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
But as you can see, the hot had seen better days and it is even worse from behind<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCtKy1lUSx6krQToEpd4OqUVk3lqAl6r_V07KPNSD9RI9WddiNtOxfi0D-gBu-j_Qh4rjBzGbYPfVLCFawvyQAfO1xgSWs1IEWAo65c0m_GXGSQ1_gNhH8LVSRTA9jZd5Yqyx_htv6s-qo/s1600/broken+vintage+sink+handles+02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1136" data-original-width="1600" height="227" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCtKy1lUSx6krQToEpd4OqUVk3lqAl6r_V07KPNSD9RI9WddiNtOxfi0D-gBu-j_Qh4rjBzGbYPfVLCFawvyQAfO1xgSWs1IEWAo65c0m_GXGSQ1_gNhH8LVSRTA9jZd5Yqyx_htv6s-qo/s320/broken+vintage+sink+handles+02.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As you can also see, the drain didn't work. I'm not sure it ever did with this set because the original spout was a porcelain bump out molded in the sink so someone wisely added a metal spout at some point to make it a less awkward hand washing experience. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKa41EoXkVZapwKIuT1CC4IF0-r0ImEBOQLdCLra52gPTlYKgUSzbRMSKT62isHxHgaSIXrBPXFn2j47nxVb3VYB-ouVHHoXBJ9X0cEy_9LmpKmeBuYoZNjkh0na8CVMO3ZeF8qM6aPvYd/s1600/antique+porcelain+sink+spout.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKa41EoXkVZapwKIuT1CC4IF0-r0ImEBOQLdCLra52gPTlYKgUSzbRMSKT62isHxHgaSIXrBPXFn2j47nxVb3VYB-ouVHHoXBJ9X0cEy_9LmpKmeBuYoZNjkh0na8CVMO3ZeF8qM6aPvYd/s400/antique+porcelain+sink+spout.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Eww, sorry, I know. But you get the idea. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I scoured the internet trying to find something with similar handles, a long enough spout to fit over the awkward bump and in my price range - meaning the $600+ Restoration Hardware sets are out. This is the set I found and they were on sale for $120 on Amazon (I know, even that seems like it would be out of my want-to-spend budget if you know me!) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

They are manufactured by Kingston Brass and they feel pretty sturdy, time will tell I guess. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
A recap, when I moved in this is what I had to work with:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj55MFGAP9oGcQJRChzLGaghZic0mjTrwvj73ds_njf5JTbizPjhwW7Fb7HxO26HLkxC9hJS02q-hvcDqI4pUTtB2FdMFjO8s-Voj_o7fyA2_3bI_u-JEIfawXS4AMaN23-3XnWX2Ox33a2/s1600/vintage+sink+before.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="915" data-original-width="587" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj55MFGAP9oGcQJRChzLGaghZic0mjTrwvj73ds_njf5JTbizPjhwW7Fb7HxO26HLkxC9hJS02q-hvcDqI4pUTtB2FdMFjO8s-Voj_o7fyA2_3bI_u-JEIfawXS4AMaN23-3XnWX2Ox33a2/s400/vintage+sink+before.jpg" width="256" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
and now:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmT70Z7Jl2AUoK8ub_kS_AXIDFhVbHGiIdXoqOQUBgLdMUDcEeesP0r5KcTNvrY1TkczWO5LygKYMKtUfUcMi_KTGso5DlYqHSI6ZYEhP4a4NhyeoWNwV0aCCL80Q0DtrukbxV9W1IIf8s/s1600/antique+sink+with+new+faucets.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1016" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmT70Z7Jl2AUoK8ub_kS_AXIDFhVbHGiIdXoqOQUBgLdMUDcEeesP0r5KcTNvrY1TkczWO5LygKYMKtUfUcMi_KTGso5DlYqHSI6ZYEhP4a4NhyeoWNwV0aCCL80Q0DtrukbxV9W1IIf8s/s400/antique+sink+with+new+faucets.jpg" width="253" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I *think* the sink is done (for now) so at least something is progressing. BUT when we hung the sink back on the wall I didn't notice it was off by an inch so now it isn't centered under the mirror. One would have to disconnect the P trap to scooch it over. Gah! It's always something! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
At least I have my naughty mermaid to look at! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

As my daughter would say "let's play a game of what's missing!"<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEja9JuByx3IcdyR_nG3sj7NR-gtaWtb6fH4Y_tHDqAg7OCEpfhAGWWO1hTvvnRpAa_kUPqfi_1tb8esFKKQARYz7yiCaC-UrWI3sBUGuyL7AVD5OCyM18G2DcMWNLh9vtsaLFT8PcTVHqo0/s1600/vintage+bathroom.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEja9JuByx3IcdyR_nG3sj7NR-gtaWtb6fH4Y_tHDqAg7OCEpfhAGWWO1hTvvnRpAa_kUPqfi_1tb8esFKKQARYz7yiCaC-UrWI3sBUGuyL7AVD5OCyM18G2DcMWNLh9vtsaLFT8PcTVHqo0/s320/vintage+bathroom.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
If you said "bathroom sink", you win!<br />
<br />
It all started when the sink was draining a little slow so I decided to get our little As Seen on TV drain snake and clean out the gunk. No problem, I'm digging around pulling up a lot of satisfying goo when...the little Velcro piece on the top of the snake falls off and into the depths of the drain.<br />
Gah, a 5 minute project turns into me taking off the P-trap, fine! But why is it leaking when I put it back together!? Surely I am capable of this basic plumbing project? Yes, except the threads on one pipe are completely corroded away. We make a Menard's run only to have me remember my dad jerry-rigged something so the sink drain connects up to that new standard plumbing. The pipe I need doesn't exist. I need my dad to remember what he did.<br />
So why did I rip the sink off the wall? This brings me to the fact I have had a new faucet set complete with drain but my dad has been dragging his feet on the situation because he is unsure he can get the new standard sized set to fit my weird antique sink. If he didn't think he could put it together, I sure wasn't going to try! (see above inability to reinstall P-trap) I figured this was as good of a chance as any to mess up the sink since he has to now figure out what he did to fix it before. Besides, if he can get the new drain set pieces installed, he wouldn't have to jerry-rig something to the bottom again so I took it apart (as much as I could) to force him to do it. hehe. I'm evil, I know.<br />
<br />

<br />
The bottom of the sink with the weird drain where my dad had to cut and piece pipes together which obviously didn't work well - unless one wants to replace it every time someone drops something down the drain...<br />
<br />

Here is a before, before of the sink. I can't find one sans stinky carpet, hmm.<br />
<br />
Hopefully we can get it pieced back together and up and running again, I'm not sure how well it would work as a potting bench by my garage. Plus, I'm not really good in the plant potting department so it would probably be wasted on me.Carahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16614543493973360714noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4048227180928594733.post-20589990616372832032017-11-19T15:40:00.000-06:002017-11-19T15:40:00.658-06:00Estate Sale AdventureWhew, don't worry, you haven't missed anything because I haven't been doing anything exciting with two little ones around. Unless anyone wants to hear about the projectile vomit I was dealing with for a week? Yeah, didn't think so!! Though I believe I have a backlog of a few projects I should post.<br />
<br />
My parents were down for a few days. Friday we were driving to lunch when we happened to spot a garage sale sign and I was driving (not my dad) so I had the power to turn and follow the sign. I rarely go out to garage sales at the moment because when you have to get two small children in and out of car seats, convince the preschooler we don't need to buy every plushy we see and carry the other one it just sounds exhausting. My dad volunteered to stay in the car with the baby while my mom and I "quickly" checked it out but 45 minutes later....<br />
It turned out to be the estate sale of the year and the lady had lived there since 1956. She was a very organized and clean hoarder also add on the fact very little had been done to the house since 1920 so it was hard to pull ourselves away! My mom and I even went back Saturday morning just to make sure we didn't miss anything, see what else had surfaced and just to browse and dig through boxes without the pressure of knowing my dad is sitting in the car. I only spent $13 but this was days #3 and 4 of the sale. I don't want to know what we missed out on or how many people were crammed into that house on day #1. On the plus side, everything was half price and then some while we were there.<br />

<br />
She had things organized in 1000's of various containers. It's hard to remember the days before the existence of coordinating plastic bins when one would *gasp* recycle and work with what they had on hand to organize their stuff!? Though I am guilty because I am gradually replacing my cardboard boxes and feel a great satisfaction while looking over my clear plastic bins neatly stacked in the basement.<br />

<br />
She had all of her candles organized in Pringles cans. I opened one labeled girls and boys to find a stack of Gurley candles. Most were warped/scratched and I almost put them back until I realized I liked the pre-barcode Pringles can. The nursery safe plastic Vaseline container is dated 1967 and has cute critters all over.<br />
<br />
Band Aid tins and jelly jars seemed to be her favorite organizational devices.<br />

<br />
I had a few pieces of this set in with my play food growing up but this tray is huge, they had it in with the regular kitchen stuff because it looks like it should hold real food. The original box sold me and I always like odd things to blend in with my Pyrex.<br />

<br />
This odd 3-Dimensional? latch hook kit. It is an Erica Wilson design but I'm not sure I trust her judgement in this case. For .25 I might try putting it together, in 20 years when I have some free time.<br />

<br />
Before I knew everything was half price I had this box for $3 because I thought the train was cute. Don't ask me were I will hang it. I don't have a clue - return in 30 years for my 80's Strawberry Shortcake/My Little Pony themed guest bedroom! <br />

<br />
and my...er, um, my daughter's? Sesame Street Little People are now living it up in style because I found a console television for them.<br />
<br />
Hopefully next year I will be able to get out and about to some sales. Though it helps in the clutter department not bringing a random box of stuff home every week!<br />
<br />Carahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16614543493973360714noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4048227180928594733.post-82677452311603270462017-06-16T16:43:00.001-05:002017-06-16T16:43:37.845-05:00I hate starting my posts with the stereotypical "I am still alive" but I guess it is true, I am still alive! My current project: window shades for child #1 and that has been happening for 6+ months now? Ha! I figured I better check to see if my blog still existed and check in.<br />
<br />
I spotted this in my constant snooping of area house listings.<br />
<br />
Check out the listing here: https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/1106-S-20th-St-Lincoln-NE-68502/6574879_zpid/?fullpage=true<br />
<br />
It is a beautiful house and it is huge but I didn't realize just how huge until I came to an attic photo:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsATJfggOldV1a6lf5eUZM2ow2noTxzAyLxagvCZ2kJDcxBN9TWtLFW0Svp9WhTVJLuy0zrK0carfnTpuGxnCTguqMae3E8UeypSXI2qh6BlDKwpjVD1RRLw0SzOyVGA8_gNLjngb431OP/s1600/ISecev3w83xr5a1000000000.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="682" data-original-width="1024" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsATJfggOldV1a6lf5eUZM2ow2noTxzAyLxagvCZ2kJDcxBN9TWtLFW0Svp9WhTVJLuy0zrK0carfnTpuGxnCTguqMae3E8UeypSXI2qh6BlDKwpjVD1RRLw0SzOyVGA8_gNLjngb431OP/s400/ISecev3w83xr5a1000000000.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
What!?<br />
<br />
I read the listing and it states there are 1750 sq ft unfinished space in the attic!? That is more square footage than my house! (maybe a little less if you want to count in my gross basement space) I can only dream about what I could organize and store in this amount of space! Fifteen Christmas trees of various colors and sizes? 283 boxes of troll dolls which are currently at the back of my closet? Plus it looks like the attic has its own attic if I needed MORE space.<br />
<br />
Anyways, I hope everyone is doing well and I do manage to get out to a garage sale or two on the weekends so I am able to leave you with this:<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
A pretty, decorative vent. On the floor of their small child's bedroom. A small child whose favorite toys include tiny Legos, miniature doll houses and we're also starting to get into Barbies. Basically, anything which will fit down the vent. I have access to the bottom of this vent but it is behind the buffet in the dining room so who wants to move that every time Barbie loses a shoe? I needed some sort of preventative feature which didn't involve completely covering the vent or *gasp* replacing the vent.<br />
<br />

The vent pops off pretty easy. It has louvers which open and close that screw onto the back. I guess I didn't get a photo of them but you can hopefully picture them.<br />

<br />
I was thinking window screening might work, and probably will but I was worried about it getting clogged with fuzz and fur. I had some square chicken wire (1/2" I think) I used in the garden last summer already which is sturdier than window screening, maybe a little easier to keep clear? I did double it up so what you are seeing is two layers. I just cut it, and then the louvers screw back over the top and keep it in place. Why didn't I get a photo of it with the louvers?<br />

Here it is set back into the floor. It looks better than I thought it would and has saved a Littlest Pet Shop tea cup so in my mind it has paid for itself already.Carahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16614543493973360714noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4048227180928594733.post-55217347814689493612016-12-31T11:05:00.000-06:002016-12-31T11:05:15.276-06:00The Beginnings of a Pink Victorian BedroomLast spring I quit my part time job with the intent of getting some much needed work done around the house and maybe think about adding child #2 to the mix after a few months. I put in my 2 week notice and discovered I was already pregnant. Whoops! So much for being productive, I spent my new found free time staring blankly out the window from the couch. That is all said and done now but my free time is spent on feedings so I have have gained negative free time since I quit my job. I did get some non-toxic work done around the house last summer, mainly cleaning out the spare room since we now would have 2 children to house. Sure, they could share (and #1 really wants to share) but who wants the baby waking up the pre-schooler and vice versa?<br />

Cleaning out a spare room isn't a problem for a normal person. Get rid of that futon, the desk, shelf of knick-knacks and maybe some old college books. On my side though it meant cleaning a room which I stuffed everything I didn't know what to do with for the past 5 years - another reason for the kiddos not to share since we weren't REALLY using this room for anything anyways! I had already boxed up some of my trolls here because I definitely am not one to have empty shelves. </div>

Here is proof the room did indeed look like it was straight out of an episode of hoarders. Minus the rotting food and feces. The trolls are packed away under the eves in the back of my closet and a bunch of stuff went to the garage sale. Though don't go in the basement!<br />
<br />
I asked #1 if she wanted to stay in her room or pick colors for the new room and move. She wanted to stay in her current room but paint it pink, get new curtains etc. I told her only one room was getting painted and since the green room was the only bedroom which has been painted in the past 30 years, it wasn't going to be that one. She must have really wanted a pink room because she opted to move down the hall. </div>
<div>

<div>
This is the repair work I did do to the walls/ceiling.</div>

<div>
The insulation holes were still showing! So those are officially patched. What I didn't do at 7 months pregnant was strip off 3 layers of wallpaper with 3+ layers of pain over the top. Which is OK because the wallpaper does a pretty good job of covering any plaster cracks! The ceiling had fresh drywall on it already so that looks good. </div>
<div>
The room is painted BUT not much else has been done. She also was very specific and wanted her "new" furniture to be Victorian. We went shopping in my parent's garage and since the furniture I grew up with in my bedroom was from that era, we just dug that out. </div>

I haven't had time to do anything else! This side was my wall of troll shelves. My sewing machine hasn't even left the room. Poor kid. Luckily her sister isn't officially in her old room yet so she still goes back and forth with her toys. Plus she is four so does she notice she has no pictures or shelves up? It doesn't seem to bother her any! She's got some new Trolls sheets and some Hello Kitty Christmas lights hung up as a night light so she's good. She picked out the color herself and I was hoping she would opt for something other than pink but nope, I painted a sample on the wall and she declared "it was beautiful!" so that was it. I was afraid it was going to look like a Barbie Dreamhouse in there but I actually like it. </div>

Yep, no staging here. This is it! Hopefully some decorating will happen. I imagine myself carefully staging everything, getting some good lighting and taking some fancy photos...oops, gotta go! Someone is having some juicy gas across the room and I'm hoping it's the baby. </div>

We Have Some Bookshelves Behind the DoorI believe this is something I pinned on Pinterest 4+ years ago? while I was planning my nursery.<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgo-XekB8txwxMv2v7lb6-UZA5vgNYrilSH1xWNy-q9pVKzaLI6Xqob1h6oFGzYIhhF0SLPC3nrzfHhKYKFquTGuEm4fXQ-duXkB5pEckPIh1N2-UZ0_FgBoInTDT6d6mnh0c33H6U0v8TV/s1600/behind+the+door+bookshelves%252C+wall+bookshelves.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgo-XekB8txwxMv2v7lb6-UZA5vgNYrilSH1xWNy-q9pVKzaLI6Xqob1h6oFGzYIhhF0SLPC3nrzfHhKYKFquTGuEm4fXQ-duXkB5pEckPIh1N2-UZ0_FgBoInTDT6d6mnh0c33H6U0v8TV/s400/behind+the+door+bookshelves%252C+wall+bookshelves.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
I was just going to nail/glue some boards together, put them on the wall and call it good enough but when my dad heard this plan he was all "no, no, no, you need to use biscuits and blah, blah, blah" OK dad, I know you are right but you have to help me! So 4 years later, here we are BUT the good news is a child could climb up these and they will be fine - pending the whole wall doesn't fall down.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Since I am cheap and like to recycle, I used some of the knotty pine paneling I took off the bathroom wall and have hoarded down in the basement which means these shelves cost me $0. I'm not sure what my dad spent on biscuits and glue, under $3? I might stain the shelves to match the woodwork someday though that will be another 5 years down the road.Carahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16614543493973360714noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4048227180928594733.post-59125524757637660952016-07-21T16:28:00.000-05:002016-07-21T16:28:36.977-05:00Dryer "Installation" Drama and Craigslist to the RescueAs much as I enjoy our funky 1970's kitchen, I assumed one/all of those 40 yr old appliances would be next on the replacement list but alas it was our 6 year old dryer, purchased new, which quit. I was hoping it was the belt but we took it apart and it was something in the motor (my dad had a fancy name for it) so he basically advised us to get a new one. If he thinks it's not worth repairing, then it's not worth repairing. I was thinking go with a refurbished one but the husband was whining about it so FINE he can pick out a new one. I line dry all of the kids and my clothes and the sheets so, apart from towels, he's the only one who uses it. Yes, I will cater to his laundry needs since he does his own laundry!<br />
<br />
We found one we liked at Lowe's on sale though the first indication I was not going to be a happy camper about this process was they required us to buy a new cord. "We don't know the current condition of the cord you own" Umm, OK, I do because it's not very old but whatever, it was $15. He asked about the dryer vent hose and I told him that was good - we have a solid metal duct. Haul-away for the old one was $15. I guess, just do it so I don't have to worry about dealing with it!<br />
<br />
Delivery day came and they show up, bring in the dryer and ask where I want them to put the old one. The husband had taken the receipt at the store while I had taken little one to the bathroom so I didn't even double check but the other $15 charge on the receipt turned out to be a new crappy accordion dryer vent hose instead of the haul-away fee. OK? The only thing I could have them do is shove it to the side. The guy asked if I wanted to use the old vent and I told him yes, PLEASE! thinking I could return the crappy, lint collecting one. I wasn't paying attention but the next thing I know he couldn't get my old vent pipe/duct onto the new dryer so he whipped out the accordion hose. I informed him not to worry about it, we could finish it up. I really just needed someone to help haul it down into the basement. "oh, no, no, I've got this!!" The accordion one was too small to fit onto the main duct piece which vents outside - at which point I should have told him to leave my house immediately but I am terrible at being a b**** to someone I don't know. He ended up using a piece of my solid duct for the top, attaching the accordion to the bottom of that, wadding up the excess and stuffing it behind the dryer. Yes, you read that correctly, he literally wadded 5+ feet of already-prone-to-collecting-lint hose and stuffed it behind the dryer. Seeming very satisfied with his work he FINALLY left. I was left with a messed up dryer vent and a non-working dryer.<br />
<br />
I had no clue what to do with the old dryer and figured I might as well try Craigslist and if someone does happen to show interest, hope it doesn't turn out to be a mass murderer. Someone messaged almost immediately, came promptly wearing an appliance repair-like outfit, had a fancy appliance cart and hauled it away. He didn't even need any help. Geez, OK, next time I know save the haul-away fee because that required almost no effort on my part.<br />
<br />
The moral of this story is next time I will try to avoid a big box store for my appliance needs and try for someone more local. Though we have 1? local appliance store I can think of which sells new appliances. So my options are REALLY limited!<br />

Yes, I am still alive and believe it or not, I have been working on stuff and taking photos thinking all along I would be doing a blog post. See, here is proof. I finished the last section of wall in the living room before Christmas...or is my tree still up??? Maybe. No, the husband starts whining mid-January when it's still up. Party Pooper. <br />

The main project I had done recently was the chimney. Water was coming in around the chimney and I just assumed it was the flashing and started calling roofers to see if they could check it out. I think I called 8? 9? roofers and ONE showed up. He came down from the roof and showed me this photo:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEtcCVzFYIQj_3qD3VVOucNyjWVCZoueVdvhPeBAnVs03yX6v8tOgkJumxvlAJLD4b_fM-h3yAWvaT3k7Ur5Zvw0g-ZWQWub5esBv1A_t6N6I-XzsKAEzulmg7jvm3u6nE3Xel7N8ynJq6/s1600/image3+%25281%2529+%25281%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEtcCVzFYIQj_3qD3VVOucNyjWVCZoueVdvhPeBAnVs03yX6v8tOgkJumxvlAJLD4b_fM-h3yAWvaT3k7Ur5Zvw0g-ZWQWub5esBv1A_t6N6I-XzsKAEzulmg7jvm3u6nE3Xel7N8ynJq6/s1600/image3+%25281%2529+%25281%2529.JPG" /></a></div>
<div>
Yikes! I knew the joints in the chimney were bad but I didn't realize they were this bad. We figured this is were the water was coming in so then I had to start the process of who does tuckpointing? The roofer knew a guy so I thought he would come out and give me an estimate but the roofer just called me back and said his guy "did" chimneys for $600. He "does" chimneys? what like takes a bag of cement and slathers it on? I moved on to a company who has done a lot of historic buildings around town and they gave me a $4800 estimate. What!? Next. I found another company who also works on historical buildings and also the owner lives a few blocks from here. They gave me a $1300 estimate which seemed like a happy medium to me. Maybe it's still expensive? I don't have any experience on masonry estimates. Also, I don't have too much of a choice of contractors who correctly work on old houses around here and I wanted my chimney to look nice!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div>
Sorry, I'm not climbing on the roof just to get an "after" shot but you can see white blob areas on the brick where someone had previously gone up and just caulked missing joints. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I didn't like the fact they randomly showed up at my door early one morning. Possibly the disadvantage of him living close "oh, my guy got back into town late last night so we thought we would pop by and see if he could get started" BUT I am pleased they came right out as soon as it got warm enough and it is all done before the spring rains</div>

We checked out their Goodwill Outlet stores which put our Omaha store to shame! In case you don't know, they sell stuff by the pound and it's like a giant treasure hunt! Or a disgusting mess, depending on your thrifting level. I spent $30 and got an antique quilt, a pouf (which I looked up on wayfair and it was $125), a combined 30 pieces of clothing for me and the little one, a couple pairs of shoes, misc. toys I got talked into and some other random stuff. It's a good thing I don't live near those suckers or I would be a level 10 hoarder in about 2 months!<br />
<br />
l have most of my treasures boxed up yet because I'm still working on the plaster etc. on the walls so why pull it out to get dirty (my excuse *cough* hoarding?) I did pull these out of my stash because they fascinate me. It was the last sale before lunch and these were just sitting on the table. This was the first to catch my eye.<br />
<br />

At first I thought it might be a good gift for my brother but nah, the style is what would you guess? 1850's?? English?? a little pre-Victorian era so it would be a little too "old fashioned" for his house. (I know he's reading this right now going "whatever") I then noticed the glass was hand beveled and also the metal on the frame was all hand cut.<br />

I examined the what I thought (and probably what the estate people thought - since you see the $2 price tag) was a print only to discover it is a painting! Perhaps a very old painting?? (I have a minor in art history so I only know enough to get myself in trouble) I can see she is on velum but I'm not going to take it apart and disrupt it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
The artist signature looks to be D.J. She's only about 3" tall but the detail is incredible! These photos just don't do her justice and I personally think she should be in a museum somewhere but I know next to nothing about miniature portraits and she seems pretty happy at my house...<br />
<br />

This gal was $4 so maybe they could tell she was hand painted? as she's not as detailed and looks to have been in a fire (or maybe just was sitting above my fireplace for 50 years, ha!) She also is in a celluloid frame so maybe is newer? or perhaps the frame was added later as the painting almost looks like it has been trimmed, perhaps something in hopes of minimizing the fire damage??<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
She seems to be painted on something solid ivory? celluloid? so not as fragile as her friend. I am tempted to free her from her 1950's velveteen job and it also looks like she might pop out if I remove the metal trim but need I say "half finished project" again? Her signature is also hard to make out (I guess I should get a closer shot of it) and it looks like part of it has been trimmed away to add to the illegible-ness of it.<br />
<br />
I think my mom and I are fighting over these still but you can see they are at my house. I do love a good mystery item! I enjoy looking at these ladies, wondering about their history and imagining them sitting in a fancy parlor somewhere long ago! I was reading a little into the history of miniature portraits and it's very interesting. In this era of having a cell phone full of photos, I never thought about what one did if they wanted an easily portable picture of a loved one pre-photography. If anyone has anymore information or good reads about these let me know!<br />

My ongoing weed battle has returned and hopefully will be ending for the season soon! After everyone else is in bed I can also escape to the garage and work on this project:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjKO6cQjdhyTNii3QBpD-uIlC2orVf5pUNJh3eAsU_lLu0iWVKR6ZjISjV6Vyr_NvIcu_ewO5xn7Ft3frDFb9o1FnSxX_eapuzw8eyBKpzhKtSV_Di88ApWBwoSPfEQTcLj2UceOpbgXZv/s1600/stripping+a+bookcase.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjKO6cQjdhyTNii3QBpD-uIlC2orVf5pUNJh3eAsU_lLu0iWVKR6ZjISjV6Vyr_NvIcu_ewO5xn7Ft3frDFb9o1FnSxX_eapuzw8eyBKpzhKtSV_Di88ApWBwoSPfEQTcLj2UceOpbgXZv/s400/stripping+a+bookcase.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Yes, this is the bookcase which I had in my dining room.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7KfQ6PA5lkslx6G5uxuiNitFhHk4KaTsLNRDvtHAFEd10Cq9nOrCWamiY5wVnGU9k__pZhvbDSXF-pfU55KP0HIoyJrwWbIgE9z0uIpGxXvnhDl1zjuy6QNDy7Yye3p8EPUPbYstggTak/s1600/vintage+painted+bookshelf.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7KfQ6PA5lkslx6G5uxuiNitFhHk4KaTsLNRDvtHAFEd10Cq9nOrCWamiY5wVnGU9k__pZhvbDSXF-pfU55KP0HIoyJrwWbIgE9z0uIpGxXvnhDl1zjuy6QNDy7Yye3p8EPUPbYstggTak/s400/vintage+painted+bookshelf.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
A normal person would have just put it back in after finishing painting and then worried about it after the rest of the house was under control in the project department. I guess I felt I needed a 57th item to add to my daily schedule last spring. Off course it got to be 110 degrees before I finished so it has just been sitting in the middle of the garage for 6 months. It's ok though because I find stripping paint with a heat gun at 11 o'clock at night rather therapeutic.<br />
<br />
Another thing I've been working on is cleaning out 100 years of crud from the fireplace.<br />
This is what we've had in the fireplace for 5+ years.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijZir9yljr2vXqV8BeYY8aOZQG4M_EQaHYS0HHAF63FXdztgAvzs1pSOIG3tz98-AU3JkseB2iV1zz1m2R_1JU0rv6gQrNayRLu8r6g9DJF9wFtKypqA0iexsiTyAr2OzZSTzhjZnAYmfM/s1600/craftsman+fireplace+with+gas+insert.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijZir9yljr2vXqV8BeYY8aOZQG4M_EQaHYS0HHAF63FXdztgAvzs1pSOIG3tz98-AU3JkseB2iV1zz1m2R_1JU0rv6gQrNayRLu8r6g9DJF9wFtKypqA0iexsiTyAr2OzZSTzhjZnAYmfM/s320/craftsman+fireplace+with+gas+insert.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Yep, the first thing you see when you walk in the door. A spray painted, squished gas insert which is way too small for the fireplace opening. This, and the gross carpet on the stairs. But I won't add another half finished project to my list yet so just this, a weird looking fireplace insert.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaen2Ch40E5EuuC_GG_ho7vQCiox-JUUEMIOzC0sDWtsbu7LUWYGwpo_HmC_A6t9tcPDz3MZ1p10MAVn1Z0mTyhDxbo7vvTs3kT1o33KliFL_6efjfyuy8yshBMFmIUwUVCpfEM972oiYV/s1600/dirty+gas+fireplace+insert.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaen2Ch40E5EuuC_GG_ho7vQCiox-JUUEMIOzC0sDWtsbu7LUWYGwpo_HmC_A6t9tcPDz3MZ1p10MAVn1Z0mTyhDxbo7vvTs3kT1o33KliFL_6efjfyuy8yshBMFmIUwUVCpfEM972oiYV/s400/dirty+gas+fireplace+insert.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
And here is the actual size of the unit without all of the extra metal framing they added to make it "fit".<br />
<br />
I am now left with:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhS_vknB43AMrylZ28Irf5twuPbNBUqb8IEmN3nK7MX4wrtnT1Fv6NJtr58Un8Y0otTY00gzxdrxqOheOPVDosQnUCcsekLIq3ctRoFd0r-9n_hQKPSbG7XHZp2VX-yZeyT8LXIacCbS2yR/s1600/dirty+craftsman+fireplace.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhS_vknB43AMrylZ28Irf5twuPbNBUqb8IEmN3nK7MX4wrtnT1Fv6NJtr58Un8Y0otTY00gzxdrxqOheOPVDosQnUCcsekLIq3ctRoFd0r-9n_hQKPSbG7XHZp2VX-yZeyT8LXIacCbS2yR/s400/dirty+craftsman+fireplace.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
At first glance, I thought they had painted the inside of the fireplace but once we finished pulling out the gas insert I could tell it was just gross fire crud. I looked online to see if vinegar would clean a fireplace and sure enough, Apartment Therapy had that suggestion. About a 50/50 water, vinegar mix. They also mentioned not using it on an old fireplace due to the acidity but wouldn't any official fireplace cleaner be harsher? Maybe if I was cleaning it out every week? But I have a delightfully tacky, log shaped electric heater to sit in here so I don't plan on really scrubbing it again. I used the vinegar on the bottom stones to the left in the photo and you can see they cleaned up nicely (they were the same as the right side). Of course, the gunk on the right side barely budged when I used my vinegar concoction so I'll have to test something a little stronger on it.<br />
<br />
It was nice they ran the gas line through the ash trap door and tucked the original cast iron trap door and frame behind the insert so we just popped them back in place. I figured there was going to be a giant hole of some kind under the insert we were going to have to patch. The porcelain log is sitting on the trap door as it pops open if you put pressure on one side or the other. Convenient if you're sweeping away ash, not convenient with a curious cat and hyperactive 3-year-old. My dad was concerned about the cat. I was more concerned about fishing out a Thomas or favorite race car from amongst 100 years of ash/dead whatever in that hole in the basement. Yuck!<br />

It could not have happened today when it's 80 something with little humidity. Nope, it happened on a Thursday night and the next several days were supposed to be over 100 with 80% humidity. I called my dad on the situation and he said it sounded like a screw fell out of the squirrel cage and informed me I could just turn off the furnace, take off the panel and poke around. You mean the panel with the picture of the guy's head being blown away by flames!!?? I was not confident enough in my abilities so I called bright and early Friday morning in hopes the furnace people would have an opening. The receptionist got my info and informed me someone would call me back to schedule an appointment. I hate calling people on the phone so I procrastinated for 3 hours and finally called them back. "Ohh, well, we have an opening on Tuesday afternoon." Yeah, I wish they would have told me that at 8am in the morning so I could have tried someone else! I called around and finally looked to see if anyone was open on the weekend and found John Henry's (who snaked our main drain since that also happened on a Saturday morning I believe.) They had a Sunday opening which was better than Tuesday! Then they called around 3:30 and wondered if they could come take a look. Umm, yeah you can!<br />
<br />
Here comes the disgusting part. The repairman pulled off the panel and found a mouse stuck in the squirrel cage. Eww! When the mouse was untangled, the ac was up and running again. It was a very easy fix but, yuck! I'm glad I called someone in for the "repair" as I'm not sure how I would have handled that situation. I am also eternally grateful for John Henry's because I didn't have to listen to my husband whine for 3 days. I informed him this house most likely didn't have air conditioning until 1982 to which he responded "no one could have survived in here without air conditioning!" I comfortably leave the windows open until it hits 90 outside (when the humidity is decent) and he starts complaining when the temperature starts getting above 75 so that sounds about right.<br />
<br />
Here is the 2-year-old's take on the situation:<br />
<br />

This is what the living room typically looks like. (though we were trying to weed out the 1980's Little People this day) The little things can be tossed into the boxes and bins but what about those awkward buildings etc.? They stayed on the floor. </div>

Our salvage store has a free day on the first Friday of the month for random things they haven't been able to sell. Needless to say I am a frequent attendee. When my mom is in town with the van? Lets just say it is not wise to let us go by ourselves. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Last month they had a huge stack of these doors. My mom said "oh, these doors make nice shelves. Too bad your dad made me get rid of mine." Wait, shelves? I could use shelves. So I selected a set which wasn't too scratched up while she went on about how if she still had hers she could have given them to me blah, blah blah. Reminder these were free so I'm not sure why she felt bad about getting rid of her set of door shelves! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I took off the hardware and they were an inch too long so I cut them down. I was originally planning on carefully filling the holes and painting the shelves but decided to let go of my OCD ways and just hang them up. I also originally was going to use the adjustable metal brackets but there is a little bit of trim on the corner of the closet door so they were then a 1/4 of an inch too wide. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
There is that closet door trim which ruined my plan! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I had an hour before I had to get to work so what was I going to do to get this done!? For some odd reason I had these short pieces which brackets fit into and viola! they fit behind the trim and seem to give the boards enough support. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

The finish color even somehow freakishly matches my woodwork color so it's a good thing I didn't paint them. I thought I wanted them to be adjustable but I like the clean floating look better so it all worked out perfectly. Her toys are lightweight so they don't need much support in the middle and if she decides to swing from it, or something weird, the shelf probably will fall but she will be showered with toys and a 3 pound shelf instead of something solid wood or particle board. We shall see! It keeps a few awkward things off the floor/at least I have an easy place to stuff them when I need to vacuum.</div>

My husband can be the judge of that statement. I almost didn't buy them because I thought they were scary. Then I came to my senses and realized I would be crazy to pass up the chance to add these guys to my collection! <br />
<br />

The photo doesn't really do them justice. It looks like they were a kit of some sort as the fabric is printed but the sewing is someone's homemade project. I am wondering how they made all three of them?? I would have gotten about half way through the first one, realized they were not turning out the way the pattern showed and it would still be up in my closet. I could have a forgotten one up there for all I know!Carahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16614543493973360714noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4048227180928594733.post-58546808892124386212015-06-14T23:44:00.000-05:002015-06-14T23:44:24.969-05:00Meet Lucca and CliffordThis is Lucca and Clifford. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgULvrbrxk6yOJIE-MPh8hS8K_WFnwXWXILztQDiy9AgPEaZ3J57JBtKyFkHopSiQeccesPOA_Ih4ZwL-XFbTSYxZB18llOqy0ZlvgymHXWop5hpuz4wwX5fnCr2OXJJEPuFFRNrzMvQ-dl/s1600/Lucca+and+Clifford.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgULvrbrxk6yOJIE-MPh8hS8K_WFnwXWXILztQDiy9AgPEaZ3J57JBtKyFkHopSiQeccesPOA_Ih4ZwL-XFbTSYxZB18llOqy0ZlvgymHXWop5hpuz4wwX5fnCr2OXJJEPuFFRNrzMvQ-dl/s400/Lucca+and+Clifford.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Lucca was received as a bribe at the 18 month doctor visit and ever since has been the figure of choice for, well, Lucca. Lucca does everything big Lucca wishes she could do - attend school, fly a plane, drive a car, hang with the My Little Pony crew and Clifford is usually by her side. Lucca is about 2" tall and flat. If Lucca is not immediately seen in the morning I have to listen to "Lucca!? Where are you Lucca!?" over and over until Lucca is found. Usually she is napping in a castle tower but some mornings it is a bit more of a challenge. One morning, after a good 20 minute search, Lucca was discovered only because I caught the glimpse of a tiny red hand sticking out from under the school house. She has also been known to hide under a bus or be stuck in the trap door slide of the Sesame Street Clubhouse. <br />
<br />
It usually isn't as vital if Clifford isn't around in the morning but Lucca has to know where Lucca is before her day can begin. We probably have 75 super cute Little People figures ranging from Disney Princess' to a construction crew but Lucca always has designated this little guy as Lucca. Yep, I could probably get rid of all of those Little People and she wouldn't even notice!Carahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16614543493973360714noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4048227180928594733.post-17136593507867053782015-06-13T08:00:00.000-05:002015-06-13T08:00:02.222-05:00Sandbox TimeI don't remember the last project my husband did, perhaps it was paint 3/4 of the house 5 years ago? Or maybe it was breaking the sink while trying to unclog it last weekend? Anyways, he is the first to admit he is not handy - which is fine with me because he lets me do whatever I want around here. When he said last weekend he was going to build a sandbox I was a little leery and figured I would have to figure out how to fix and finish it but it actually went rather smoothly. <br />
<br />
We picked out some cedar wood. We actually found fence pickets which were the exact length we wanted (minus the 1/2" of picket at the top) and they were $4.97 a board.<br />
<br />
I cut the top picket shape off - neither I nor my husband trusted him to cut it straight. <br />
<br />
The boards were sanded and then screwed together.<br />
<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
We have a pretty square! </div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxJBS5CEYxV30Y69pLWzHlr2kwEIswU9cJ6hxU2CWtKlTTgm7vS2-OX9WECO7upKEOcr1SOUbEMClyolhZM29JCuDINuAhNBe9wCmXOsnblqbzABALdzbsOVf9smD4jAo9u7yBtxd3y9kR/s1600/filling+the+sandbox.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxJBS5CEYxV30Y69pLWzHlr2kwEIswU9cJ6hxU2CWtKlTTgm7vS2-OX9WECO7upKEOcr1SOUbEMClyolhZM29JCuDINuAhNBe9wCmXOsnblqbzABALdzbsOVf9smD4jAo9u7yBtxd3y9kR/s400/filling+the+sandbox.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Come on dad! It needs more sand!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
While looking at other sandbox tutorials, I noticed most people put a board on the bottom. My dad just stuck this black garden cover stuff under my sandbox as a child and it held up a good 10+ years so I just went with that in our sandbox. Plus it is cheaper and way easier than measuring/attaching a bottom.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRHmvsLJM-c1lTBwTCMN5Jsxgq-rz8UtjZhixJLAAi7waO0RlRu_J_yS2xBgAQSAPVwkIqZMO-tLz-c7Ae_2MMFWZvxMx8_7UqPwLF3zyMFsP_iVR7dy_cnrGJjGo8j6zO121pajtcB1ws/s1600/finished+cheap+and+easy+sandbox.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRHmvsLJM-c1lTBwTCMN5Jsxgq-rz8UtjZhixJLAAi7waO0RlRu_J_yS2xBgAQSAPVwkIqZMO-tLz-c7Ae_2MMFWZvxMx8_7UqPwLF3zyMFsP_iVR7dy_cnrGJjGo8j6zO121pajtcB1ws/s400/finished+cheap+and+easy+sandbox.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We'll be adding some corner benches for support but it's being used as-is for the moment.</div>
<br />
One thing I would recommend is leveling around the edges prior to filling with sand. Two of the corners were a little lower than the rest of the box so sand was threatening to escape. I did cram dirt under and level it that way but it would have been easier to do before! I also am not really crazy about the sand. Menard's, Wal Mart and Home Depot all had the same looking sand labeled "play sand" but it is really red and really pebbly. Menard's also had super fine sand for twice the price but I don't think that is really good to crawl around in either. The small child obviously doesn't care as it works just fine for sand castles!<br />

I haven't done a "random stuff that is coming into my house" post lately. I guess it's been winter so no garage sales and I have been trying to avoid bringing "new" stuff into my house. With the warmer weather coming around it is nice to get out of the house again and garage sales are the perfect excuse! Along with the excuse of finding cheap clothing for the child. Unfortunately, I have managed to find her everything she actually needs for the next year down to a new coat plus some odds and ends for the next year and it's not even May yet! Darn it! Also note, I even try to make it a challenge and not pay more than $1 for anything - yes, the brand new winter coat was $1. I think the moral of this rant is: there is no shortage of cheap, cute, clean kids clothes so get out and save some money while enjoying some fresh air at the same time! <br />
<br />
I would like to show you the Pyrex I have added to my collection since Christmas:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJIdl_x_YNYUQJT2i5QDd3-xhJ8tIXyYrTHhJROJgzHVbd1gSc_YE5RL5mGPedTgcAmFy-yirDjrr7xmd4gYgHWBcwGzWEJQAMBg0a-KddlyR6q8vun_gjeIEcih9v3hqVw59hyphenhyphenIxvyDtS/s1600/Rainbow+Stripe+Pyrex+Blue+Glass+Pyrex+Bowl.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJIdl_x_YNYUQJT2i5QDd3-xhJ8tIXyYrTHhJROJgzHVbd1gSc_YE5RL5mGPedTgcAmFy-yirDjrr7xmd4gYgHWBcwGzWEJQAMBg0a-KddlyR6q8vun_gjeIEcih9v3hqVw59hyphenhyphenIxvyDtS/s1600/Rainbow+Stripe+Pyrex+Blue+Glass+Pyrex+Bowl.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Oops, I guess I got a piece for Easter but yep, two pieces. </div>
<br />
I did pick up this piece for $2 as I was itching to buy something to <strike>awkwardly sit on my counter until I find a spot for it</strike> add to my collection. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjyD5Y4ugUkpsam3c2TT66BfvFtMHCHNDPMqBZ6eRm02T_pZrPEf3-l2g5Gelq_JycIfEtkbbjV34hqi-oaWJYP0I6lUEPVjkaUNlbck5XBcJuY1R-dBeWkbKgNjCTqcWF6MDQccs6L3fX/s1600/Country+Autumn+Pyrex.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjyD5Y4ugUkpsam3c2TT66BfvFtMHCHNDPMqBZ6eRm02T_pZrPEf3-l2g5Gelq_JycIfEtkbbjV34hqi-oaWJYP0I6lUEPVjkaUNlbck5XBcJuY1R-dBeWkbKgNjCTqcWF6MDQccs6L3fX/s1600/Country+Autumn+Pyrex.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
It is a "Made in England" piece which I did some quick research and the pattern is "Country Autumn." It looks like it was available here in the states in the mid-80's. Definitely has that 80's vibe and I like the brown lid. <br />
<br />
I just about didn't even pick up these guys. In fact, I walked past them several times trying not to make eye contact with them or the Christmas table they sat upon. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8975efyNT_sdNKKaaWliyvlBPXzGmCVTQL_63onKv4fon0wNioZjMwruCklvb-pdjbrY_dq9nArnxNs-FSvhlyaR-YOOxz59r-h1JOLsJn7vccuVQAFdzJ5o8kFAmHLnnhns1prmW6_cn/s1600/DSCN3972.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8975efyNT_sdNKKaaWliyvlBPXzGmCVTQL_63onKv4fon0wNioZjMwruCklvb-pdjbrY_dq9nArnxNs-FSvhlyaR-YOOxz59r-h1JOLsJn7vccuVQAFdzJ5o8kFAmHLnnhns1prmW6_cn/s1600/DSCN3972.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
They finally were successful at calling me over and when I picked them up I was surprised to see the Breyer mark on their leg. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJgyQqFiMFa5hG-UWrMT7MxAU7k6HnqT5GG14pK7kRboxEftQUWC8CaxLBBVEjg00tPizN83ioSjUAWC-qKZy9e8LUjcybntfYHz1AGtsigRHhdCN9v_jyos-95OJ5MmWSr6iU3RGPFGP8/s1600/Gold+Modernistic+Breyer+Deer+Mark.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJgyQqFiMFa5hG-UWrMT7MxAU7k6HnqT5GG14pK7kRboxEftQUWC8CaxLBBVEjg00tPizN83ioSjUAWC-qKZy9e8LUjcybntfYHz1AGtsigRHhdCN9v_jyos-95OJ5MmWSr6iU3RGPFGP8/s1600/Gold+Modernistic+Breyer+Deer+Mark.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I have seen plenty of Breyer horses but never crazy gold deer! Needless to say, at .50 for the pair, I had to bring them home. They are now sitting happily on my buffet and they don't give off a Christmas vibe on their own. At least the husband hasn't come to me scared about some of my crazy Christmas reindeer escaping from their box so they must come across as normal everyday décor, well, normal for me. <br />
<br />
It sounds like there is a chance of rain here tomorrow so I haven't decided if I'm dragging myself out of the nice warm bed to venture out into the hectic garage sale world or not! I hope everyone has a great weekend!<br />

<br />
I've had this corner officially painted and these guys in for over a week now and am trying to decide what to put in them. Mark said no trolls but that isn't much of a problem as I have plenty of other things! The trick is deciding what. I am also thinking I need to slide some white wallpaper in the back of the shelves because they are so dark. Something else to add to the project list. Yes, these are Billy Bookcases from Ikea. Yes, feel free to make fun of me because I like Billy Bookcases.<br />
<br />
We just got an Ikea in the Kansas City area last fall which is an easy day trip for us. Yay? My aunt lives about 10 minutes from the Colorado one so I have been spoiled by leisurely making my way over on a Tuesday morning and then maybe hitting it again Thursday or Friday afternoon. You know, barely anyone goes to an Ikea in Denver on a Tuesday but apparently it is THE place to be in KC on a Saturday. Yikes! and it is small. Small for an Ikea. <br />
<br />
The before shot of the corner:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I have to layer the stain on thick to match so it takes a couple of days to dry to my satisfaction and then I can polyurethane and paint. A few before and in progress photos:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqnfvYD1zVP9Tkm04VKzvZCZ-U90sk9Q0abKe_w0gyyJRdROsRg-oGtU-XjUmUeGrSyF1b6jNj1oZmTtiv9gr4eWLy0g9MuC5PLCCIdLl_CNjF2Tz9sJfZOIW3tDGmEQ7aoc32eP3TlYdy/s1600/removing+old+masking+tape.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqnfvYD1zVP9Tkm04VKzvZCZ-U90sk9Q0abKe_w0gyyJRdROsRg-oGtU-XjUmUeGrSyF1b6jNj1oZmTtiv9gr4eWLy0g9MuC5PLCCIdLl_CNjF2Tz9sJfZOIW3tDGmEQ7aoc32eP3TlYdy/s1600/removing+old+masking+tape.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
Yep, looks like 20+ year old masking tape on the bottom of the window sill to me! Also note, the paint is well past the masking tape and onto the front of the woodwork. Why did someone take the time to tape the edges if they weren't even going to try!? The paint scraped off just fine but that masking tape stuck tight. I just used my muscle (which isn't much!) and scraped until it came off. I suppose water and/or vinegar would have helped the process. <br />
<br />
Next, above the tape:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpmeY73dWMRJgFVWtGdA4gf8m4PANuYZUWUluuKcRf-UzrhCQP7WpoJTEdwGwK01axDgESDZKTNC6EMSdab3dWrUedq5TU1eTLj6JeZUna2-63ZAfFT_h6NcZ01JZZHHrmDyCcRVHia5pw/s1600/refinishing+a+window+sill.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpmeY73dWMRJgFVWtGdA4gf8m4PANuYZUWUluuKcRf-UzrhCQP7WpoJTEdwGwK01axDgESDZKTNC6EMSdab3dWrUedq5TU1eTLj6JeZUna2-63ZAfFT_h6NcZ01JZZHHrmDyCcRVHia5pw/s1600/refinishing+a+window+sill.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Several plants? Drinks? had left their mark on the window sill. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqlKwYtgnvkDPe7-v5E92DPzGBdLZ4-V-CcvcBkIojzpa8Atzr8FILAv7EPRkcqF_OuLni_cpcGypHopynGKi3xCW6RuFxbSr4zHX9ZbiyXkt71-echvuQfT3Ndn0zLpndk0pmsz8tZ_dj/s1600/refinishing+a+window+sill+02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqlKwYtgnvkDPe7-v5E92DPzGBdLZ4-V-CcvcBkIojzpa8Atzr8FILAv7EPRkcqF_OuLni_cpcGypHopynGKi3xCW6RuFxbSr4zHX9ZbiyXkt71-echvuQfT3Ndn0zLpndk0pmsz8tZ_dj/s1600/refinishing+a+window+sill+02.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Sanded.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYOnHxcr-ToKzNgfykVq-L5Qz8YgkOeKo0UEUXp71iRrDywK7DKGWAccChN27UFNLfuH8siiQvy-YwbnJO6xYKj5VIT1Z_ERE4t3VmyU33BcSeDnqANexW9bV9i5lGg8O_OiNEDaG4m2La/s1600/refinishing+a+window+sill+03.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYOnHxcr-ToKzNgfykVq-L5Qz8YgkOeKo0UEUXp71iRrDywK7DKGWAccChN27UFNLfuH8siiQvy-YwbnJO6xYKj5VIT1Z_ERE4t3VmyU33BcSeDnqANexW9bV9i5lGg8O_OiNEDaG4m2La/s1600/refinishing+a+window+sill+03.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
The middle is still a little gloppy in the color as some of those weird stains were not going to come out without more sanding and only the soft sections of the wood sand. So, I either have a few dark stains or a wavy window sill. Which brings me to my next area of concentration. The woodwork by the door...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaX2OilEwZDfyELfDeOnuZLTUXmnO7QpDSRCrJlh32FBudyAvTimT_aaegSCDVtG57Ft84-_VmA8rMSskFpfkhhA7SbEjjLlRmJlg8BAe7fCthYccVVqCdiFItSRequexMmNV2IhUGvtxQ/s1600/refinishing+woodwork+01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaX2OilEwZDfyELfDeOnuZLTUXmnO7QpDSRCrJlh32FBudyAvTimT_aaegSCDVtG57Ft84-_VmA8rMSskFpfkhhA7SbEjjLlRmJlg8BAe7fCthYccVVqCdiFItSRequexMmNV2IhUGvtxQ/s1600/refinishing+woodwork+01.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
Bernie (previous owner's dog) or someone he knew, really wanted in and out ALL of our doors and this is the result around most of them. Someone tried sanding this out at one time with what looks like a power sander of some sort which took the soft (currently darker) wood away, leaving the lighter, harder portion of the wood. Bernie then probably immediately put these fresh scratches in but I'm not going to bother sanding them out. I hate changing out original woodwork but this piece is really messed up and gross so it is on my future project list. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjk08jjHEqGsI9HvyDlKSKKp5QgR0xtraguT7wMVcS7w1wJ2-C8JfedQmFnYaYCrcQh32aKOfxEwKx268x6f28iro31gFu1JZ6rcVL4aLih6tu56WTl1t4GI88x3jStJ9kDfFiy6yUEhsiB/s1600/refinishing+woodwork+02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjk08jjHEqGsI9HvyDlKSKKp5QgR0xtraguT7wMVcS7w1wJ2-C8JfedQmFnYaYCrcQh32aKOfxEwKx268x6f28iro31gFu1JZ6rcVL4aLih6tu56WTl1t4GI88x3jStJ9kDfFiy6yUEhsiB/s1600/refinishing+woodwork+02.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
Surprisingly, the scratches hid well. You can see the various wood heights on the grains though - especially up by the door knob! The door is another future project. Yes, I believe that is wood filler on the door. I'm telling you, this dog must have spent hours scratching on doors! <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiH4jgCg9HMc-oWAOgoaMDVrVbUgU0c4bidIXc9L8O9_VotnTPsPrHsizLVHUwQoMLbmy_qOfPdPhrtFRitHwdaF0qhU0hdAp1Z_0oCoxtmL5jziNiIUsmM4j1u8rDNRz9DaY-F19RB1kAI/s1600/DSCN3853.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiH4jgCg9HMc-oWAOgoaMDVrVbUgU0c4bidIXc9L8O9_VotnTPsPrHsizLVHUwQoMLbmy_qOfPdPhrtFRitHwdaF0qhU0hdAp1Z_0oCoxtmL5jziNiIUsmM4j1u8rDNRz9DaY-F19RB1kAI/s1600/DSCN3853.JPG" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
but it has been stuck behind this floofy 80's curtain with the broken mechanism the entire time we have lived here. <br />
I had to get rid of that huge track of a curtain rod so I could work on the wood trim but the window has some issues: it doesn't close tight and has no storm window. The curtains are insulated so they stayed. Also, our (enclosed) porch has some issues such as the husband's bike and a collection of plywood so no one wants to sit on the couch looking at that mess!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5TF7eVBwVryj6fzC4i4TUPUELJFaHcLThtPJOmr6KAyl0aiyZ9tfzQe6P7RRPxHwGSi5Y1kkqgBefCsQ-sAwyMZ1YKf-5fkrtNBcWGiJSDYxbnGipNqYVIG5Tt_NSnBQNYHWFjTgpkOjI/s1600/DSCN3858.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5TF7eVBwVryj6fzC4i4TUPUELJFaHcLThtPJOmr6KAyl0aiyZ9tfzQe6P7RRPxHwGSi5Y1kkqgBefCsQ-sAwyMZ1YKf-5fkrtNBcWGiJSDYxbnGipNqYVIG5Tt_NSnBQNYHWFjTgpkOjI/s1600/DSCN3858.JPG" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
Yep, there is the plywood. Oh, I forgot I also added some plastic a long time ago as some additional insulation so the remains of that was also lurking behind the curtain. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhd4IpfF4CWoCyrGJfcTq7pNXFuBuFwe_QnWErdnkQ58V18aWGiGBdy1f6KFyawV5XxlwZpi83oOhgnzxoICgy8bOdW-SNiKOlUE6Juv2SqgQVt3bOPy7ZvfC9DMxYFqmExRrvy4UjXOvdk/s1600/DSCN3863.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhd4IpfF4CWoCyrGJfcTq7pNXFuBuFwe_QnWErdnkQ58V18aWGiGBdy1f6KFyawV5XxlwZpi83oOhgnzxoICgy8bOdW-SNiKOlUE6Juv2SqgQVt3bOPy7ZvfC9DMxYFqmExRrvy4UjXOvdk/s1600/DSCN3863.JPG" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
I tacked the curtains on the outside of the window, which won't win any awards for attractiveness on either side, but it allowed me to get rid of the rod, keep the window draft-free and we don't have to look at the messy porch. Now I can admire my super nifty window...while I am sanding and refinishing it. <br />

Here is my current area of concentration for plastering/painting. Ugh, so much white paint falling off down to the minty green paint! Latex on oil? is my suspicion. Or latex on cigarette smoke as it doesn't seem they scrubbed the green wall before painting from what I've been cleaning off of it. Yuck!! and the shades have been on the door for a couple of weeks now. Yes, yes they do have to be cracked open at the bottom at all times. Why do you ask?</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
It's amazing how much more I like the door now that it matches the woodwork. Someone had stained it at some point but didn't put a finish on it of any kind so it was flat brown. I put polyurethane on it and the woodwork so it all has the same shine. It is a little different color than the original trim though they didn't use the best wood (the knots!) plus it is probably 70ish years newer.</div>

This is the box for my prized aluminum Christmas tree. I'm still not sure why someone markered "Christmas '96 Hastings" on the top. I got it at a garage sale not too long after that date. </div>

I made some strips from paper bags and used some wood glue to secure them to the corners. The "supportive" husband: "What are you doing?? Why don't you just go get a plastic tub and stick it in?"</div>

Pfft, he just doesn't understand. It's the original box! As you can see, it has that weird brown packing tape all over it so I wasn't concerned about adding some more brown to reinforce the corners. I then had it sitting to cure for a while before putting in the branches and the cat decided it would make a good perch. Hence why it is on top of the fridge in this photo. </div>

And my tipsy Santa ornament will be the end of this post and the Christmas décor until next season!</div>
