Furnace Time Part II

So I've had this post about 1/2 written for the past 2 or 3 weeks. I should just schedule a weekly time to sit down and write so I don't have to start out my few measly posts lately with excuses.

It's been fairly warm outside but so far so good on our new furnace/heat pump. It's amazing how much better it seems to be working already though our gas bills will be the real test.

The old furnace.

The new, clean furnace. No more groping around in the dank, dark corner trying to get a 3' x 4' door off just to change a filter. The new little sliding door is front and center! The furnace guys even scrubbed down the floor so they definitely get bonus points.

The old ac.

The new monster ac with heat pump.

The one thing I was sad about losing was my vintage controller. They wouldn't even let me keep it. I thought the guy was going to have a heart attack talking about the mercury thermometer inside. Gesh, I'm glad I didn't mention my old cooking thermometers which are in the drawer right below. Really I didn't need this lying around in my vintage decor hoard so it was a good excuse to tell it goodbye.

Ugh, this is what I get to look at now. It is nice because it is programmable but I'm not used to what looks to be some kind of NASA control panel on my wall. It also glows a bright green just in case I am fortunate to forget its presence for a moment.

  1. LOL, I had the same disgust when we switched out our vintage panel for a new programmable one. Although my love of being warm on demand won out over my nostalgia. I am biding my time for them to design programmable stylish ones-- hey, if leg warmers and crimped hair can come back in style, then why not these?

  2. I think we have the same thermostat. I do like all the features it offers...

  3. Take a peek at the NEST thermostat. Honeywell tried to sue NEST 'cause it looks very similar.. yet modern (an ex-Apple team designed it). We have one in our 1911 Japonesque bungalow here in Vermont. It looks pretty decent as it still references and alludes to the earlier Honeywell design in both form and function.

  4. I've seen the ads for them and thought they were kind of nifty. I didn't think about them making reference to the earlier round thermostats but I can see it now.
Meh, we'll use the came with the furnace stat for a while. The fact that it is entirely a touch screen makes me think it will wear itself out in a few years.

  5. Aww, that vintage thermostat control is definitely really pretty, what a shame it couldn't be used for the new furnace! But at least you're more comfortable with that new furnace now than you were with the old one!

  6. A new furnace and an AC unit are always a great addition to the house. Simply because it will help make it more comfortable to live in. And it’s good to know that it has been properly installed in a timely manner. Just keep it well-maintained so that it will last longer. Enjoy!
